The Dining Space Upgrade You Didn't Know You Needed

The Dining Space Upgrade You Didn't Know You Needed

Most people upgrade the bedroom, repaint the living room, and leave the dining space exactly as it is until a guest sits down and the chair wobbles. Sounds about right?

Here we work with solid wood every single day. We talk to buyers, we visit homes, and we hear the same thing over and over: "I did not think the dining area needed much attention." However, once you find yourself seated in an excellent dining area, your first instinct will be to ask yourself, "Why did I wait so long for this?"

Well then, here is the actual step-by-step guide on how to give your dining space an upgrade, both from the aesthetic and practical point of view.

Start With the Table. Everything Flows From There

The dining table is not just furniture sitting in the middle of a room. It is the upgrade that lets everything else get arranged around. If you make the mistake, no matter how well your drapes hang and how expensive your chandelier may be, your room will be uncomfortable.

It is obvious when asked the first question: “Who will sit at the table, and how many?” The answer will determine the budget.

Generally speaking, the most suitable dining table for Indian families would be a 6-seater dining table. It will accommodate the whole family without crowding anyone, while accommodating visitors as well. This kind of dining table will not fill up a decently sized room like some bigger options would. On the other hand, a smaller one may appear uncomfortable if the family expands or invites some guests.

Once size is sorted, the next thing to get right is the material. It decides how long the table holds up, how it looks five years from now, how gracefully it ages, and how much effort you will put into maintaining it over time.

Sheesham or Mango Wood: Here Is the Honest Answer

This is when many buyers find themselves confused, while some furniture sellers tend to give vague answers. So here is the simple version.

Sheesham or Indian Rosewood is tough, dense, and termite-resistant. It can be used daily and will not be prone to dents. The other type is Mango wood, which is known to have a uniform finish. It is also eco-friendly since mango wood is obtained from unproductive mango trees. The mango wood table can serve for about 8 to 12 years.

For a long-lasting dining table, sheesham is the better choice. To purchase a fashionable, affordable, and easy-to-move one, Mango Wood should work just fine.

One clear point to make – don’t go for MDF or engineered wood for your dining table. They may seem like great options at first, but ultimately, their edges will start peeling, warping due to exposure to heat and water, and they won’t last as long as solid wood tables will.

Add a Cupboard to your dining room

In the case of dining rooms (and indeed all rooms for that matter in today’s space-limited world), furniture such as a cupboard can prove to be lifesavers. There was a time when tall crockery cabinets and shelves were common, especially when space constraints were not an issue. Today, a mini wardrobe cum cupboard is a practical alternative to the crockery shelf and a great addition to your dining room.

This provides you with sufficient leeway to display your expensive collection of wine bottles or sets of new crockery. It also functions as a space-saving storage solution, making it a worthwhile investment.

Lighting Is the Most Underrated Part of This Upgrade

You can make alterations to your dining room’s lighting system to instantly get that ambiance. Get yourself a fancy chandelier hanging from the ceiling, about 75 cm to 90 cm, along with other wall-mounted lamps and even floor/table lamps to see the magic happen. As long as there are no space limitations, it would be good to go for more than one source of light.

The combination of a brass finish pendant light with a sheesham table is good, whereas a black matte pendant light is best suited to a lighter wooden table. The choice is less about money and more about suitability and detailing.

Chairs: Stop Matching Everything Perfectly

When the entire dining table setup consists of one table and six chairs that are identical, the room could end up looking boring. That is why designers have long recommended choosing mix-and-match chairs. It creates an environment that seems thoughtful and unique rather than something you might see straight out of a product catalogue.

Choose a wooden dining table and then upholstered dining chairs that would complement the wood colour. Having two chairs with armrests at the ends of the table and four other side chairs already adds a touch of deliberation. With a sheesham table with warm undertones, deep teal, terracotta, and sage green fabric chairs will do wonderfully.

It requires some deliberation to choose furniture items that have something in common but are not completely the same.

The Rug Underneath: Get the Size Right

Of course, rugs might be perceived as daring decisions, particularly when you have children or animals at home. However, there is nothing to worry about since current manufacturers offer completely proven products. Introducing some contrasts to your interior is a good idea if you need to cover the flooring material that does not match your color palette.

Further, the larger rug will make it very easy for you to arrange your table and chair settings to suit the overall theme. The regular size of a rug is eight by ten feet for a 6-seater dining table. One needs to pick flat weave rugs or those with low pile to wash and flatten after removing chairs.

Turn Your Space into a Family Room

We are sure you agree that family meals always started at your family’s dining table. Well, in that case, transform your dining room into a space for your whole family to come together. Decorating a gallery wall will be great to feature lovely family photos on your dining table.

Long cabinets in the dining room work well when showcasing family valuables, while being another room for dinnerware storage. The baskets and trays will come in handy in keeping other organised items, perfect for families who work from their dining room table.

What Pulls a Dining Space Upgrade Together

Many times, there are images of those rooms that we would like to recreate. It may not be easy to choose from among all the designs that have caught your attention, but selecting those small features of those rooms that make them beautiful may be hard. We are hoping that these recommendations, like  6 seater dining table, mix and match chairs, and adding warm lights, etc., will give you an idea of alternative elements to those that you would like to add to your dining room.

FAQs

How much floor clearance is required for a 6-seater dining table?

Leave at least 90 cm on each side. This provides enough space to pull out chairs and move around freely without feeling confined.

Does sheesham wood perform well in humid Indian conditions?

Yes, particularly when kiln dried. Wipe spills immediately, keep it out of direct sunlight, and apply furniture oil or shine every few months. That's all it takes.

Can a wood dining table look well with mismatched chairs?

It almost always looks better this way. A solid wood table with cushioned or metal-frame chairs appears more curated than a totally matched set.
